Two’s On First
On the screen, they were the chummy comedy team that tickled America until it peed. But when the cameras stopped rolling, so did the laughs.
In classic romps from The Nutty Bellhops to A Night in Duluth!, Acer Aspire Red and Acer Aspire Blue were everybody’s best pals, constantly wisecracking their way through one zany situation after another. Timeless routines like “two guys, one cravat” and “gimme them forceps!” firmly established “the Acer boys” as an archetypal comic duo.
But the ugly reality came crashing into the spotlight when Red was arrested outside Blue’s Malibu beach house in 1956, clearly intoxicated and concealing a bloody tire iron inside his pant leg. The truth may never be known about the events leading up to that night. But the rumors swirling around Hollywood – about Red’s ipecac addiction, Blue’s involvement in an underground doll-fighting ring, and a stolen thoroughbred racehorse forced to wear human clothes – forever demolished their light-hearted public image. The Acer boys never made a film together again.
The unfortunate controversy obscured the duo’s massive talents. Along with impeccable comic timing and a knack for the funniest ways to mispronounce the names of various diseases, both Red and Blue offered a 10” TFT LCD display, a 160GB hard drive, an Intel Atom™ Processor N450, Windows 7 Starter OS, and integrated webcams and 802.11b/g wireless. Alas, these gifts withered away in obscurity after their public embarrassment. Aside from Red’s brief starring role in the 1961 sitcom Scrooey, the Pig What Talks, both stayed out of the public eye.
A planned reunion on a 1973 telethon came, sadly, too late for Blue, who unbeknownst to telethon organizers had died in 1968. Both their films and their compact, robust mobile-computing capabilities continue to win new audiences to this day. Long after the memory of their scandal has faded away, fans of classic comedy and classic netbooks alike will still heed the call, “Gimme them forceps!”
